
Why Lexington Businesses Need Websites Built for AI, Not Just Google
Something has quietly changed about how people find local businesses.
A few years ago, someone needing a security camera system in Lexington opened Google, typed "security camera installation Lexington KY," and scrolled through ten blue links. Today, a growing share of those people open ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity — or just read Google's AI Overview at the top of the page — and ask a question in plain English: "Who should I call for commercial security cameras in Lexington, Kentucky?"
They get back a short answer naming two or three companies. Not ten links. Not a map with twenty pins. Two or three names.
If your business isn't one of them, you didn't rank poorly. You weren't in the conversation at all.
This is a different game from traditional SEO, and it rewards different things. The good news: most of what makes a site work for AI also makes it work better for Google and for actual human beings. The bad news: a lot of Lexington business websites are structurally invisible to AI systems right now, and their owners have no idea.
Here's what actually matters.
First, can AI systems even read your site?
This sounds basic. It's the single most common failure we find.
AI assistants reach your website through crawlers — automated readers with names like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. Your site's robots.txt file tells those crawlers whether they're welcome.
The problem is that a lot of websites block them, and the owner never chose to. It happens by default:
- Security plugins and firewall rules that block "unknown bots" as a blanket policy
- Bot-protection settings at the CDN or hosting level, switched on during setup
- A
robots.txtcopied from a template that disallows anything not explicitly named - Well-meaning advice from a few years back about "blocking AI scrapers"
If you blocked those crawlers deliberately to protect your content, that's a legitimate business decision. But most businesses that block them never made the decision at all — they just inherited it. And the cost is total: an AI system that can't fetch your pages cannot recommend you, no matter how good your business is.
Check yoursite.com/robots.txt in a browser. If you see rules blocking the crawlers named above, or a sweeping disallow, that's the first thing to fix.
Second, does your site state who and where you are in a form machines can parse?
When an AI assistant answers "best digital signage company in Lexington," it needs to be confident about three things: what you do, where you do it, and that you actually exist as a real business.
Humans get that from your homepage design. Machines get it from structured data — a block of JSON quietly embedded in your pages using the Schema.org vocabulary. It spells out, unambiguously: this is a business, here is its legal name, street address, phone number, hours, service area, and the specific services it offers.
Without it, an AI system is guessing from paragraphs of marketing copy. With it, there's nothing to guess about.
For a local business in Fayette County, the pieces that carry the most weight are:

That last one matters more than it looks. sameAs is how you tell a machine that the business on your website, the business on your Google profile, and the business on your Facebook page are all the same business. It's the difference between three uncertain fragments and one confident entity. We recently found that our own site had those links sitting as empty placeholders — a small oversight that quietly weakened every AI signal we had. It's a common one.
Third, make sure your name, address, and phone match everywhere
AI systems don't trust a single source. They cross-reference. Your website says one thing, your Google Business Profile says another, an old directory listing says a third — and confidence drops.
Small inconsistencies do real damage: an old suite number, a tracking phone number that doesn't match your main line, "Ave" in one place and "Avenue" in another, an outdated ZIP code. Each one is a small reason for a machine to hedge instead of recommending you.
Pick the exact format of your name, address, and phone. Make every place they appear match it, character for character.
Fourth, answer real questions in plain language
Here's where AI search diverges most sharply from old-school SEO.
Keyword stuffing never worked well, but it sort of worked. It does nothing here. AI systems pull passages — a few sentences that directly answer the question the user asked — and cite where they came from. Your job is to make those passages easy to find and easy to lift.
In practice:
- Use real questions as headings. "How much does a commercial security camera system cost in Lexington?" beats "Our Pricing Philosophy."
- Answer in the first sentence underneath. Don't build to it over three paragraphs. Lead with the answer, then add nuance.
- Be specific and concrete. Actual price ranges, timelines, and requirements get cited. "Contact us for a custom quote" gets skipped.
- Add FAQ sections to your service pages. The question-and-answer format maps almost perfectly onto how these systems retrieve information — and it's genuinely useful to the humans reading it, too.
The pattern worth internalizing: write like you're answering a customer who called and asked, not like you're filling a page with keywords.
Fifth: make sure your pages render without JavaScript
Some crawlers execute JavaScript. Many don't.
If your site is built so that the content only appears after JavaScript runs in the browser — common with certain app-style builds and page builders — some AI crawlers fetch your page and see essentially an empty shell. Your content is there for people and invisible to machines.
Server-rendered or statically generated pages don't have this problem. If you're unsure which you have, view the page source (not the inspector — the actual source) and search for a sentence you can see on screen. If it's not in there, you have a rendering problem worth fixing.
A note on llms.txt
You may have heard about llms.txt — a plain-text file at the root of your site that gives AI systems a clean map of your key pages and a short description of your business.
Honest take: it's an emerging convention, adoption across AI providers is still uneven, and nobody should promise you rankings from it. But it costs almost nothing to add, it's easy to keep current, and it makes your site's structure obvious to anything that does read it. We put one on our own site for exactly that reason. Add it — just don't expect it to carry the load that structured data and real content do.
What this means for your business

What's changed is that a second discovery channel now sits alongside search, and it's growing fast. Being found there depends less on backlinks and more on whether your website is legible to a machine: reachable by crawlers, explicit about who and where you are, consistent with your other listings, and full of direct answers to the questions your customers actually ask.
The businesses in Lexington that sort this out over the next year will show up in AI answers. The ones that don't will slowly notice fewer inbound calls without ever seeing a ranking drop that explains it.
